A giant leap to newer heights - The New Indian Express

Debarjun Saha | 21:02 |

Every step of the ascent towards the peak of Mount Everest was one of struggle and excruciating pain, says Arunima Sinha, about scaling the world's highest mountain.

Speaking on Monday at the Velammal Matriculation Higher Secondary School, as part of her felicitation ceremony, Sinha said that it was when she was recuperating from her injuries that she  sustained in a train accident, she resolved to ascend Mount Everest.

"Everyone laughed at my decision. They wondered how I would be able to climb after I had my leg amputated," she said.

Talking about her struggle since 2011 to find sponsors and trainers who would fund the climb and also help her prepare for it, Sinha said that it took her two years to find a corporate sponsor in TATA Steel. The organisation provided her with the funding and training required to climb Everest.

Sinha said that midway through the climb, she had witnessed the corpse of a Bangladeshi climber who had begun his ascent only a couple of hours before her. The sad sight made her more determined to reach the top, in order to consecrate the memories of all those who had perished on the mountain.

After the arduous journey to the top, she had almost run out of oxygen. Sinha said that while she was on her way down the mountain, her prosthetic limb had dislodged from her leg a couple of times. At one point she feared that even her guide would have to leave her behind.

Sinha also said that Bachendri Pal, the first woman to have climbed Mount Everest, was extremely supportive of her efforts and had broken down seeing Sinha's determination.

At the event, Sinha distributed prizes to students who had secured State ranks in the 10th and 12th standard exams.
