First private DNA forensic lab in India will be overworked in no time - Northern Voices Online

First private DNA forensic lab in India's Gurgaon will be overworked in no time. This is going to be a huge hit in India and may even prompt a spurt in launch of such private labs across the country in the coming days. The recent launch of a Forensic lab in Gurgaon is a big development as government forensic labs across the country seem to be overworked and suffer from lack of facilities. Reports suggest that with the increase in modern criminal activities and also because of it being closely linked to health, not only this forensic lab is going to become in great demand, we may see a series of launches of similar labs in the coming days.

Reports suggest that while in European countries and the US, DNA forensic labs are a common sight, India badly needs such labs. Apparently there are just around 30-32 such labs in a country with around 1.2 billion population, China with slightly more population has in excess of 300 forensic DNA lab.

This is the reason that such labs across the country are overworked and a simple DNA testing report takes such a long time in getting it processed and testing done. To be true in a nation where crimes are rampant and rapes have become a very common crime in many parts of the country, DNA testing has become an important tool in nailing criminals and perpetrators of the heinous crime. It is also very important in establishing the identity of people who become unrecognisable after some accidents or other incidents. The importance of the DNA testing stems from the fact that every cell of every living organism contains a vital chemical component called deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). DNA contains the genetic code to the cell and organism's design, function and development. Translation of this code has resulted in phenomenal advances in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and physical disorders and in the study of heritage and genealogy, in addition to contributing to the increased effectiveness of law enforcement.

India is abysmally short of DNA forensic lab and there is an urgent need to establish more similar forensic labs. Though this was very important aspect for healthcare and judicial system, but there was actually no DNA lab in the national capital region. Devashish Ohri whose firm has opened the nation's first privately run DNA forensic lab in Gurgaon says "There are only around 28-30 DNA forensic labs in India. While China has 300 or so such labs. So clearly there is room for more capacity and forensic capability here".
