Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)'s Mangalyaan Mission or Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) will be launched on October 28. There were speculations that the recent message by NASA's Curiosity rover might bring changes in the MOM's mission.
Curiosity rover has not found even a single trace of methane on Mars. But, this is not going to affect MOM's plan. The mission will be carried out with the same mission and that is to look out for methane on the surface of Mars.
Finding methane on Mars is a big clue that life has existed on the red planet. "The main MOM objective is to be a technology demonstrator for interplanetary missions, to demonstrate that we can travel to outer space and insert a spacecraft into the Mars orbit", affirmed Deviprasad Karnik, Director of Public Relations at ISRO.
SK Shivakumar, Director of ISRO Satellite Centre, has cited some reasons for carrying out the mission. The mars mission by ISRO can come up with such findings that can support NASA's Curiosity mission. Another reason is that it can explore the part on Mars that has not been explored by Curiosity.
The spacecraft has been shipped to Sriharikota and from there it will be launched on the decided date.
