Leopard attacks again, in broad daylight - Times of India

Debarjun Saha | 16:17 |
CHANDIGARH: An adult leopard struck within four days of killing a sheep lamb in the area of the man-eater of Thunag and killed a goat in full view of herdsman on the main road near Bunalidhar village on Saturday afternoon. A leopard had killed and eaten a lamb on Tuesday at 10 am near Pokhridhar, at a spot 500 metres away from Seraj MLA Jai Ram Thakur's house at Tandi village in Mandi district.

Three humans have been killed by the man-eater so far, while two suspected male man-eaters and a cub have been killed in the frenzied hunt for the man-eater. The goat was killed near the spot where Nawab Shafath Ali Khan of Hyderabad shot a 35-kg adolescent leopard on August 21. A bigger leopard, sitting nearby behind a shelter, escaped when Khan fired at the smaller leopard, and is suspected to be a female and possibly the elusive man-eater. Khan had shot the adolescent leopard in Bunalidhar near the house of Mani Devi, who had been killed by a leopard o n July 24. The lamb was killed near Lah Gala village where a leopard killed Kashmir Singh during the night of August 10.

"The goat belonged to a herder of Bunalidhar, Keshav Ram. The leopard attacked the goat in full view of the herdsman and near the main road. However, as people raised alarm, the leopard escaped, leaving the goat behind. The goat was taken back to the village later. Apparently hungry, the leopard seemed undaunted by the humans and, unlike other leopards, is not wary of attacking during the day. People of the area suspect that it could be the man-eater,'' sources told TOI.

Conservator of forests, Mandi, Harsh Vardhan Kathuria was not available for comments on the latest goat killing. However, after the death of the lamb, Kathuria had told TOI on Wednesday, "I have directed the DFO (Nachan) to collect samples of the lamb's body and send it for tests to a wildlife laboratory to determine whether a man-eater killed it or not. We are hopeful of getti ng some hair of the leopard or some other sign from the lamb's remains to help us come to a definite conclusion about the leopard. We have set up a cage near the site of the lamb killing as also a camera trap to ascertain its identity. Leopards have been killing livestock like goats, dogs and sheep since long and there is more than one leopard in the area. So it is not certain whether the lamb was killed by the man-eater.''
