LUDHIANA: For all the exotic locations city residents like to holiday in, they are yet to let the idea of a Martian settlement sink in. "A trip to Mars? sounds like one of those impractical but interesting Hollywood movies," said 21-year-old Upasana Khullar from Civil Lines.

As many as 8,107 Indians signed the Mars 1 project but it has somehow, failed to catch the fancy of city residents, who are either unaware or incredulous. As on August 27, India stood fourth among 140 other countries planning to build a permanent human settlement on Mars in 2023.

The last date for registration of the same was fixed for August 31. Considering the ramifications of a Martian settlement, Rajdeep Aulakh, a 22-year-old student from Kitchlu Nagar said, "8,000 is too less! If more people were to sign up, the population on Earth would go down a little. This would eventually be good for the planet."

Kirti Latvia, a schoolteacher from Civil Lines, fears ins tead of learning from their mistakes on Earth, people might end up repeating them on Mars. "In the near future, there is a possibility of people actually having to shift to other planets because of the rising pollution levels on Earth. The way people have been spoiling the environment, I hope those who are lucky enough to shift base to another planet do not repeat the same mistakes," she said.
