Ultra-Fast Magnetite Electrical Switch to make future computers blazing fast. A small change in the size of current computer chips can boost the power and performance of computers, says a study. The study made by a team of researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy's SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory has found out that a little change to a computer chip will lead to the production of small, faster and more powerful PCs.

The study has clearly noted that magnetite, a natural magnetic mineral, can bring a change in the quickest-probable electrical switching time that will help the machines work on the chip faster. Electrical switching – a process of moving a switch from non-conductive to the conductive state – results in making our existing electrical circuits.

When it comes to electrical switch in samples of magnetite, it is many times faster, the scientists said. They used SLAC's advanced Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) X-ray laser to find out that it took only 1 trillionth of a second to flick the on-off electrical switch in new tech. Simply it is now thousands of times faster than the current transistors in use in computers, the study has noted.

Results and findings of the study were posted in Nature Materials magazine on July 28. As per Roopali Kukreja, the lead author of the study, the project has really chanced upon to reveal the so-called "speed limit" for electrical switching in this material.

According to the researchers, "when the laser pulse struck the sample, the electronic structure was rearranged into non-conducting "islands" surrounded by electrically conducting regions, hundreds of quadrillionths of a second later," writes Fox News.

Simply, adopting the new changes in chips, the next gen computers will perform thousands of times faster than the current computers. Of course, it will also have its impact in tablets, smartphones and other devices.
