PERTHNOW readers have sent their best snaps of the supermoon which shone over Australia last night.

Yesterday marked the closest point the moon would come to Earth this year, about 25,000kms closer than usual.

Check out our gallery of the supermoon seen across the world.

Astronomer Dave Reneke said Sunday night's elliptical orbit meant the moon would be roughly 356,000km from Earth - tens of thousands of kilometres closer than the average 380,000km orbit - making it appear as much as 15 per cent bigger.

"Supermoons are not rare but unusual ... and this one (was) a little bit closer, a 'super' supermoon," he said.

He said the supermoon took on a slightly yellow colour as it rose but then changed to a silver hue as it climbed higher in the sky.
