Mysore, Sreekantswamy B, June 20, 2013, DHNS:

With thousands of citizens stranded across northern parts of the country due to landslides, flash floods and deluge, following heavy rains, Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL), Mysore, has been mandated to prepare and send specialised food suitable to the local conditions, to provide for them.

According to DFRL Director Harsh V Batra, following a message from headquarters at Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), New Delhi, the laboratory will take up the culinary exercise from June 21. The first consignment of 2,500 to 3,000 food packets is expected to be readied and sent on June 27 or June 28. To meet the exigency, the laboratory will be working on weekends as well.

Food habits considered

Going by the food habits of people stranded in different parts of Uttarakhand and other northern states, 1,000 packets of 'Sooji halwa' (Kesaribath), 'Upma' (Uppittu) and vegetable pulaav, each weighing a kg, will be initially sent.

Last year, during flash floods at Leh, the laboratory had sent three tonnes of two food items — Sooji halwa and Upma. The laboratory had responded to the food needs even during the 2004 tsunami. The laboratory is a regular supplier of food for border security forces (BSF) and other Indian Army units.
