Are they bored with the life in the country, or are high incidents of rapes making them feel insecure. Thanks to Mars One 21000 Indians want to settle on the Red Planet. When Mars One asked people to apply for settling down on the Red planet, they were sure to get hundreds of thousands of applications, if not millions. Nonetheless they hadn't bargained for the fact that so many people from a South Asian nation will be applying to settle down on Mars. They must have felt startled given the high number of applications from India, a nation where human development indices match with those of Sub Saharan Africa. A latest report had suggested that almost forty percent of all child bride cases come from here and where annual per capita income is as low as just US$ 1500. This is not even comparable to the per capita income of a fellow South Asian nation like Sri Lanka where per capita income has risen to as much as $3500 and where Human Development Indices present a far better picture than those in India.
Other than these realities of life in this part of the world, people here have been fascinated by Mars. The prospect of moving bag and baggage to the foreign shores has charmed the Indians for long now. But moving to a different planet is what has caught the fancy of the country as it ranked second worldwide among the applicants who wish to permanently settle on Mars. A total of 20,747 Indians have submitted their applications with a non-profit foundation funding the project called Mars One. The project that grabbed the headlines world over the minute it was announced intended to establish a permanent human race on the Red Planet that is found to be having an atmosphere to make the life sustainable. The project would be launched in 2023. To be true the excitement about it is unprecedented not just in India, but throughout the world. As many as 2,02,586 applications were received from across the globe as the first phase of Mars One Astronaut Selection Programme ended. While United States remained on top with 47,654 applications, India followed it at (20,747). The tenth spot went to Spain that saw 3,722 applications. China stood fourth at 13,176, followed by Brazil 10,289, Britain 8497, Canada 8241, Russia 8197, Mexico 7464 and Philippines 4365. In a statement issued it was said that the final selection would be made, in three rounds for next two years, from among the applications received. The first batch of six-ten teams comprising of four members each would be shortlisted and sent for seven years of training in 2015. Once the training finishes they would be sent as the first humans to step and live forever on Red Planet. By the way selection process is faster than many of us might have anticipated. "Those selected for the first round would be notified by the end of 2013. The second round comprising of a personal interview by the selection committee members would resume in early 2014," the statement said. Nonetheless there are doubts about the viability of this whole exercise as many space agencies including NASA think that it is unviable.
