New communication system to be tested - Times of India

MUMBAI: Nasa will attempt a major breakthrough in space communications by using laser, for the first time, between the earth and the moon and vice versa. If successful, it could one day lead to 3-D high definition video transmissions in deep space becoming routine.

The experiment will be carried out once Ladee reaches the moon.

According to Nasa, Lunar Laser Communication Demonstration's (LLCD) main mission objective is to transmit hundreds of millions of bits of data per second from the moon to earth. That is equivalent to transmitting more than 100 HD television channels simultaneously.

Since NASA first ventured into space, with the Apollo programme, it has used a radio frequency communications platform.
