India's Mars Orbitor Mission spacecraft, which is scheduled to be launched in the next couple of months, will be unveiled here on September 11.

The Mars Orbitor Mission spacecraft will be launched by the polar satellite launch vehicle (PSLV-C25) between October 21 and November 19.

The space craft, with its payloads, has successfully completed the Thermo-Vacuum Test that extensively tests the spacecraft under simulated environment of space.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) said the PSLV-C25 launch campaign has commenced at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota and that its first stage with strap-ons is already assembled. The PSLV will be ready for satellite integration by October 10. The Mars Orbiter will carry nine scientific instruments on board with a scientific objective to study the Martian surface, atmosphere and sustainability of life.

The available launch windows to launch the Mars mission during this decade are 2013, 2016 and 2018. Isro has chosen to the launch the Mars Orbiter mission between October 21 and November 19 as it is during this period that the red planet will be closer to the Earth.

Following the launch, the orbiter will embark on a nine-month voyage to orbit the Red Planet. During its orbit, the satellite will be at a distance of 54.6 million km away from Earth — the farthest any Indian satellite would have traveled. India will be the sixth country to launch a mission to Mars after the US, Russia, Europe, Japan and China.
