Last chance for a one way ticket to Mars

Today is the final day for Canadians to apply to boldly go on a one-way trip to the red planet.

So far nearly seven-thousand would-be Canadian spacemen and women willing to leave Earth for good have applied for Mars One.

The goal of the six-billion dollar project is to establish a permanent human colony on Mars within a decade.

More than 165-thousand applicants from 140 countries have paid fees ranging from five to 75 dollars in hopes of being selected for the voyage.

Lex Marion of Vancouver is one of them.

The 26-year-old says he's always wanted to be part of something truly out of this world that would give his life meaning -- and moving to Mars would certainly do the trick.

Mars One is the brainchild of Dutch entrepreneur Bas Landorp.

The plan is to initially send four settlers to Mars who would be followed by others, every two years.

The project, should it get off the ground, has many inherent risks.

Organizers say there could be an accident during launch, vital components could malfunction during the journey, issues might arise when entering the Mars atmosphere and there could be problems during landing.
