Twitter Can't Replace News Agencies: Study - Austrian Tribune

According to U. K. scientists, they have found news agencies to score more than Twitter to first provide people with the news. A research was done into reporting of news events by Twitter and newswire services.

The findings have revealed that Twitter can sometimes break the news before news-wires. However, there is a little evidence that reporting of major events can be reported first by Twitter.

A software algorithm was developed by scientists at the Universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow to track twitter activity. They used the algorithm to study 51 million tweets for a period of 11 weeks in summer of 2011. They also compared them with output from new outlets over the same period.

BBC, CNN and the New York Times were among the media houses that were being tracked for the study. Scientists found that many minor news items featured by Twitter had been ignored by the mainstream media.

However, researchers said that neither Twitter nor news-wires was regularly faster than the other to be the first to report high-profile news.

The findings suggested that Twitter outperformed news-wires for speed for mainly reporting sport and disaster-related events.

Dr. Miles Osborne of the University of Ediburgh's School of Informatics is a lead study author. He said, "Twitter and traditional news outlets each have their strengths in terms of delivering news".
