According to a latest study, news agencies continue to rule over Twitter in being the fastest to provide news to viewers and readers.

The research found that Twitter can only break news ahead of news wires in rare frequency. However for big events there is little confirmation that it can surpass traditional news agencies.

Twitter can help with added coverage of events and for sharing news items that are of vital interest to people, say local sports results.

Twitter activity was tracked by the scientists at the Universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow through a device that they developed. They stidied 51 million tweets for a period of over 11 weeks in summer 2011 and did a comparison with info from news agencies for the same time period.

Newswires that were tracked comprised of the BBC, CNN, Reuters and the New York Times that first lay down the news agenda and break news stories before one another.

Scientists scrutinized Twitter messages in connection with most important news items. They also acknowledged a large data of minor news items that had featured on Twitter though had been unobserved by the conventional media.

Twitter stood ahead of agency wires for sport and disaster-related events.
