prang saw moon's twin bite the dust - The Australian

Debarjun Saha | 07:32 |

EARTH may once have had two moons, the one we see today and a much smaller "twin", say lunar scientists. The second moon would have formed early in Earth's history from the same giant impact thought to have given rise to the surviving moon.

Erik Asphaug, from the University of California at Santa Cruz, will explain his theory at a conference to be held at Britain's Royal Society in September. "The second moon would have lasted for only a few million years, then it would have collided with the moon to leave the one large body we see today," he said.
