Each figure wears a swimming cap in the recognisable Google colour scheme of blue, red, and yellow, with an added green snorkel to complete the set. The swimmers bob up and down as they are splashed by a passing wave.

Summer solstice marks the day were the sun is at its highest point in the sky. The date varies between June 20 and June 22 according to the calendar year, and provides between 15 and 20 hours of sunlight depending on where you are in the world.

Last night, police estimated that 21,000 people gathered at prehistoric monument Stonehenge, Wiltshire, to celebrate the traditional spiritual significance of the solstice.

Other solstice celebrations include building huge "Viking" bonfires in Iceland as the Nordic sailors used to do, and an ancient Chinese ceremony to honour the earth and femininity.

The word solstice itself mean "standing still sun".
