More observes World Environment Day - MorungExpress

In an effort to raise global awareness of the need to take positive environmental action, Krishi Vigyan Kendra Phek observed World Environment Day on June 5 by organizing activities like awareness generation, essay competition for high school students, drawing competition for junior classes and tree plantation at Nazareth School, Pfutsero, Phek.
Speaking on the occasion, V. Lovitoli Sema, SDO Pfutsero illustrated on the theme, "Think.Eat.Save. Reduce Your Foodprint" and suggested the measures to protect the environment and actions pertinent to this region. She called upon the young generation that this earth belongs to them and their actions will determine the future of the Mother Nature. She also stated there is urgent need to take up plantation and save water, while suggesting buying only essential commodities in required quantity to avoid wastage. Meanwhile, the principal of the school, Fr. Jayaraj cautioned that "God will forgive but Nature will not", so he urged the students to take utmost care. "Hunting is a serious problem that leads to vanishing of many wild animal and birds, on other hand, forest fire is creating havoc and causing depletion of many wild species," he stated.
To commemorate the occasion fifty saplings of Ficus hookeri (Khaboo) were planted by the chief guest, principal and students. The plantation was followed by a drawing competition on the theme, 'Save our mother earth from human destruction', and an essay competition on the topic "Impact of jhum cultivation on the environment". A total of one thousand five hundred students participated in the programme, whereas seventy two of them participated in the competitions. The programme concluded with a prize distribution ceremony and valedictory function.

ICAR
World Environment Day was celebrated in ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region on June 5 to take part in raising global alertness for taking positive action towards environment. For this, a small function was organized at the down colony, ICAR Complex and its premises at 4:00 PM. The programme was graced by the presence of the joint director, Dr. Bidyut C. Deka, scientists, technical officers and other staffs of ICAR along with the locals of the nearby villages. The programme was initiated by the Joint Director through planting tree sapling followed by the other scientists, programme co-ordinator and administrative officer of the centre.
The programme was mainly meant for the small children of the ICAR employee and local villagers. Each of them planted one tree sapling, which they will take care and the best one will be awarded during Christmas. ICAR planned to make that area as Children Park in coming days.
Dr. Deka, in his speech addressed to the small children of the colony, told the importance of trees in human life. Light refreshment was served to all the participants at the end of the programme.
In another programme, 1000 saplings of pine and alder were planted in Wokha by the KVK-Wokha and similar activities were carried out at Ruzaphema by KVK-Dimapur.

KVK Nagaland University
Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Nagaland University celebrated world environment day at Bethel School, Lumami under the theme THINK. EAT. SAVE. The programme was graced by Honorable Vice Chancellor Prof. B.K. Konwar, Nagaland University. In his speech he emphasized upon protection of environment, reducing pollution in the environment and to reduce wastage of food grain. Visakho Shunyu, SMS (Plant Breeding and Genetics) spoke on the importance of world environment day and how to protect our environment for our future generations. On the occasion of World Environment Day extemporary speech, essay writing, drawing and quiz competition was organized to create awareness on environment which was followed by prize distribution. The programme Coordinator Dr. R.K. Chaurasia KVK expressed his sincere gratitude to Headmaster, Principal and all the staffs of Bethel School for successful celebration of World Environment Day
