Formation of board will help State in getting Cauvery water: Vasan - The Hindu

Formation of Cauvery Management Board and Water Regulation Committee alone can help Tamil Nadu get its due share of Cauvery water from Karnataka as per the final award of the Cauvery River Water Disputes Tribunal, said G.K.Vasan, Union Minister for Shipping, here on Saturday. He told presspersons that it is the routine of farmers of Cauvery delta districts will take up Kuruvai cultivation in the month of June every year. Karnataka also will release Cauvery water to help kuruvai cultivation. But this year Karnataka has not released water and has not shown the human attitude of sharing the available water with the fellow farmers of Tamil Nadu. It is not fair on the part of Karnataka to refuse water. This will set a wrong precedent. The Supervising Committee on Cauvery which is going to meet again in July should take a decision on sharing water and instruct Karnataka to release water. Otherwise there is no point in having the supervising committee. With respect to proposed project for extraction of Methane in the delta districts, Vasan said that already delta farmers are in distress with no water for kuruvai or for that matter even for drinking in many places. In that situation, their fears about underground water depletion and pollution should be allayed by both Central and State Governments before taking any decision on Methane project. BJP is fighting on who will be its prime ministerial candidate. But the Congress will highlight its achievements and get the confidence of the people reposed on it again by people in the coming Lok Sabha elections, Mr. Vasan said.
