MYSORE: Heritage city went green as it observed the World Environment Day on Wednesday with awareness rallies, jathas, lectures, sapling planting, eco walk and mass cleaning operations by various organizations. All the programmes spread the message of environmental protection. About thousand women members of Sri Kshethra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP) took out an awareness rally from Kote Anjaneyaswamy temple to the deputy commissioner's office holding placards with messages like 'Green is life' and 'Shun plastic'. City police commissioner K L Sudheer flagged off the rally. Speaking on the occasion, the top cop said SKDRDP has released a leaflet which has useful information for all on environment conservation. Earlier, the Organizati on for the Development of People (ODP) took out an awareness rally and mass cleanup across the city and collected garbage. The rally commenced from Kote Anajenya temple. ODP director Fr J B Xavier said the animal-human conflict in city areas is because of man reducing green cover and animals entering human habitat in search of food. The Environment Day was celebrated at Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens by planting of saplings by Zoo executive director B P Ravi. A private hotel took up a green walk with all employees covering around 20km around the city. They distributed pamphlets on green awareness to citizens. Quiz and film show for children: Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Limited (KREDL), in association with the Institution of Engineers (India), Mysore Chapter, organised a quiz for students, film show on environmental pollution and energy saving. The star attraction was a demonstration on real solar equipment like solar photo voltaic charger, pump, cooker, heater, dryer and stove all mounted on a lorry.
