Asteroid Turns Out To Be New Beast

The Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico has helped a group of scientists to discover that an asteroid that was seen last month flying past Earth was actually from a new class of space rock.

It was on May 31, when Asteroid 1998 QE2 sailed along with its moon within a range of 3.6 million miles from Earth. The big asteroid made its closest approach to the planet for two upcoming centuries at least.

The asteroid was found in the year 1988 in August when astronomers were working in collaboration with MIT's Lincoln in New Mexico near Earth Asteroid Research program.

The report found that one lap is completed by the space rock around the sun at a gap of every 3.8 years. Arecibo's Ellen Howell said the asteroid was dark, primitive as well as red. The same meant that it was neither heated, nor melted like any other asteroid. He further said that QE2 was actually a completely new beast in the asteroids' menagerie close to Earth.

"QE2 is nothing like any asteroid visited with a spacecraft, or plan to, or that we have meteorites from. It's an entirely new beast in the menagerie of asteroids near Earth", Howell said.
