Shillong: Several new cave systems were discovered in February this year in Meghalaya during the `Caving in the abode of the clouds expedition` in the Jaintia Hills. Umkrypong and Lakadong were the focus of the discoveries. There were 32 cavers from Austria, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Switzerland, US, the UK and the Meghalaya Adventurers` Association (MAA).
"The expedition team was also accompanied by five associated scientists from India, Switzerland and the UK, who conducted bio-speleological studies," said Brian Daly Kharpran, general secretary of MAA, which has been hosting this expedition for the past 23 years. The team explored and mapped 15.3 km of new cave passages.
At Umkrypong, the cavers explored Krem Tyngheng/Diengjem, India`s second longest cave and the one with the longest continuous exploration period (2004 to 2015). The search was extended from 21,774m to 22,078m. Krem Lakhon, an impressive river cave with large galleries, chambers and relic passages, was partially explored over 2,628m last year.
This year, the exploration was completed adding another 412m to a total of 3,040 m. Krem Lyntung, a new cave comprising a kilometre of excellent and well decorated river passage and dry relic passages, was also explored.
