GSLV Mark-III successfully test fired: India moves forward towards sending astronauts in space

Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) first sub-orbital flight and India's latest generation launch vehicle GSLV Mark-III lifted off successfully from the Sriharikotta space station, near Chennai at 9:30 am today.

ISRO chief Dr K Radhjakrishnan confirmed the successful test firing of GSLV III and congratulated ISRO's team on the highly successful launch. He termed it a very significant day for India. With this launch now India can also send astronauts in space.
The rocket is capable of doubling the capacity of payloads which India can carry into space and it can deposit upto four tonne class of communication satellites into space. The cost of this experimental mission is Rs 155 crores.

GSLV Markk III is conceptualized and designed to make ISRO fully self-reliant in launching heavier communication satellites of INSAT-4 class, which weigh 4,500 to 5,000 kg. It would also enhance India's capability to be a competitive player in the multi-million dollar commercial launch market.

The main purpose of the mission is to test the rocket's atmospheric flight stability with around four tonne luggage.

GSLV Mark-III's second and incidental objective is to study the re-entry characteristics of the crew module - called Crew Module Atmospheric Re-entry Experiment - its aero braking and validation of its end-to-end parachute system.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated all the ISRO scientists for GSLV Mark III's successful launch.
