For photo addicts, nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts, 'Uyir Nizhal', the annual photograph exhibition on wildlife and nature of the Osai organisation, is sure to be a paradise.
Inaugurated on Saturday, the expo, held to mark the Wildlife Week from October 2 to 9, features over 1,500 pictures of landscapes, birds, mammals, reptiles, insects and fauna of the Western Ghats. Nearly 60 professional photographers, amateurs and students have contributed for the expo, which contains the pictures of more than 350 bird species, says K. Kalidas, president of Osai.
It is being organised by Osai jointly with the Forest Department, Rotary Club of Coimbatore Metropolis and the Zoology Department of Kongunadu Arts and Science College, which is hosting the event.
The event goes beyond just an expo. For, the volunteers will explain to the visitors the significance of the exhibits. Each and every photo will be accompanied by a note explaining it in both English and Tamil, besides its scientific name. The objective is to create awareness about the importance of the Western Ghat's ecosystem in maintaining water sources in the region, he says.
Documentaries on wildlife and nature will be screened on all the nine days of the expo.
Drawing, elocution and quiz contests will be held for school and college students.
V. Ganesan, Conservator of Forests, Salem, inaugurated the expo. M. Senthil Kumar, District Forest Officer, Coimbatore, and C.A. Vasuki, Joint Secretary of the college, spoke.
The venue of the expo is Kongunadu Arts and Science College.
The expo will be held till October 12. It will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. No entry fee will be charged for the event, which was open to all.
