BANGALORE: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday said the government was committed to providing good transport facilities for commuters and was working towards widening roads, constructing flyovers and underpasses in the city.
He was speaking at the inauguration of the Peenya satellite bus stand in the city. "We are spending close to `26,000 crore for constructing the Metro and improving our transport system. We will provide any support needed," he said.
The bus stand has been built on 6.25 acres at a cost of about `39.25 crore. It will be functional from September 1.
Siddaramaiah also asked the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) to concentrate on maintaining cleanliness in buses, with basic facilities for commuters. "It is essential as they (KSRTC) have to compete with private bus services," he said.
The CM said the aim of these utilities should be providing good services to citizens, not making profit.
On the dumping of garbage at the Mandur landfill, Siddaramaiah said he has directed the BBMP Commissioner to sort out the issue within three months. Officials have been asked to set up segregation units in all 28 Assembly constituencies, he added.
Transport Minister R Ramalinga Reddy said all four road transport utilities were making profits and there was "no cause for concern".
The Peenya stand has been named Basaveshwara Bus Terminal and is expected to help reduce congestion at the Kempegowda Bus Station, which is facing a space crunch because of the ongoing Metro work.
A total of 1,021 departures to parts of North Karnataka, Tumkur, Pavagada, Davangere, Kunigal, Hassan, Chikmagalur and Mangalore zones will be shifted to the new stand in a phased manner, KSRTC said in a statement.
The commercial complex at the terminal is expected to earn KSRTC close to `3.20 crore in revenue.
