MANGALORE: The fifth edition of Vishwa Konkani Student Scholarship programme disbursed through Vishwa Konkani Student Scholarship Fund under the aegis of World Konkani Centre saw scholarships worth Rs3 crore being disbursed to students on Wednesday. The fund, since its inception in 2010, provided scholarships worth Rs 8.5 crore to 12,451 students starting from class XII to professional students and those studying abroad.

Observing that the scholarship programme has achieved its objective of making students from Konkani speaking communities into professionals, who can stand up to peer competition in a fiercely competitive world, chief patron of the fund T V Mohandas Pai asked the fund managers to provide scholarships to 1 lakh students by 2030.

"This is a must if we need to make Konkani community a leading community and one with a voice," he said.

Stressing on the need to make youth as community leaders, Pai said the next logical progression is to make them global leaders with an entrepreneurial bent of mind. It is imperative to create an entrepreneurial class in a technical-centric world, he said adding that the community can progress in a technically-driven era. Pointing that rewards system are big in technical set up, he said the fund should consider creating an Angel Funding to spur entrepreneurs.

With the fund already having a tie-up with Manipal University to train students covered under the scholarship programme at their incubation centre, Pai said even if 1-2% of the Konkani youth become entrepreneurs, they can strive to become 'Dollar Billionaires'. Citing the example of how promoters of WhatsApp struck it big with their entrepreneurial venture, he said the fund should set up a seed capital fund for such dreamers.

Reminding the community that democracy is a system of competitive lobbying, Pai said Konkani speaking people are just 25 lakh in a total population of 1.25 billion. He further said that the community must also address leadership vacuum at the national level and that it will benefit Konkanis if they ingrain the old Jewish congress of progression.

Pointing that the strength of the community lies in its language, culture and history, Pai said that this is also a community that is as much united by the language as it is divided.
