"My body itself feels the same, I have the same kind of feeling in my arms and my legs," he added. "At night it's a little bit different because you tend to float in your sleeping bag."

Mr Gerst demonstrated the complete lack of gravity by letting his microphone float across the room and turning upside down effortlessly.

The astronauts on board the ISS tend to work 12 hour days, he explained, with around an hour a day of free time to call family, write emails to friends or simply look outside at the universe.

The main thing he will miss about space when he returns to Earth in November is the view of the planet from above, despite "having circled the Earth in 90 minutes, and knowing every corner of it".

"I will miss the view out of the window...that is so amazing, so beautiful, he said. "I've never managed to repeat the same picture twice."

Being privvy to such an incredible view, he explained, was why he tweeted so many pictures to share with the world.

While living in space was undoubtedly an amazing experience, personal mementoes did little to keep the 38-year-old missing his life on earth.

"I realise I miss things like running in the forest and standing in the rain in the summer that will never be replaced with things up here," he said. "This little planet, that's our home and we cannot replace it with anything else. We always want to go back, I guess."
