Villagers reported hearing "a huge piercing sound" moments before one of the three "fireballs" came to rest in a resident's vegetable garden on Friday, according to China News Service.

"I saw a huge ball of fire, I thought it was a meteorite," one local said.

"I hid inside my house and waited until the object... landed."

China News described the metallic spheres as silver-grey in colour and "surrounded by jagged edges and burn marks".

One of the objects, pictured, is reported to be 75cm wide and weighing up to 41kg.

While investigators are yet to determine the origin of the objects, commentators say a Russian communications satellite which burned up in the Earth's atmosphere on Friday may be to blame.
