Scientists turn to nature to make drones of the future

The flock of drones has got a robot with bird-like grasping appendages and in some form a robo-swarm or flock. Researchers remarked that this development is pushing the technology forward because nature has solved several challenges through evolution and drone engineers are still finding it tough to address several problems.

Aerial robotics expert Prof David Lentink, from Stanford University in California said that we are yet to develop a drone that can avoid a wind turbine. He added that it is tough to fly drones in urban environments, where they have to navigate several obstacles.

The researchers got inspired by insects' "amazing capability of flight in clutter" and engineered sensors for their experimental drone based on the eyes of the insects. The eyes in the drone are tiny cameras which are then linked to an on-board computer which can steer r the drone away from surrounding objects.

Another team succeeded in developing the robot ic copy of a bat wing that demonstrated the range of movement and flexibility of the wing. The experimental drones have been described in the journal Bioinspiration and Biomimetics.
