The joystick which has earned such huge amount is a spring-loaded hand controller complete with attached cables. This antique piece was previously owned by Apollo 15 commander David Scott, who brought it to earth as souvenir before the return of 1971 mission team to Earth.
A total of around 600 items that have traveled to the Moon via NASA's Apollo space missions were put under hammer in RR Auction's Space & Aviation online sale, which started on Thursday and ended on May 22.
Earlier, it was reported that the controller had a starting bid of $10,000, which is really negligible when compared to its final selling price. According to Bobby Livingston, executive vice president of New Hampshire-based RR Auction, an European client bought the joystick.
Livingston said that the found the collectable unique that it saw more use than most when Scott had to manually land with the joystick after the 1971 module get out of his hand during his desc ent to the moon.
Robert Pearlman, editor and founder of space history website CollectSpace.com said that we all can imagine what it must have been like to land on the moon, but it is highly exciting to lay your hand on the joystick that accomplished that feat. At the same time, worth every bit of the more than half a million dollars it commanded at auction, he added.
