An edible water bottle has been developed by a design student in the UK. The bottle works on a unique concept that after drinking water from it, you can actually eat it.
For the past few months, Rodrigo Garcia Gonzalez and some other students from Imperial College London have been endeavoring to develop the Ooho water bottle, which is made up from edible material and looks similar to a jellyfish.
Experts are of a firm belief that this bottle will soon end the business of bottled water industry. Gonzalez has taken the inspiration from the juice-filled pearls and the creations of legendary Spanish chef Ferran Adria for his Ooho bottle. Adria encases liquids in edible membranes known as sheperification.
A frozen ball of water was used by Gonzalez to develop this bottle, which he dipped into a calcium chloride solution to create a gelatinous layer.
Another solution was then used to soak the frozen ball made from brown algae extract. The structure was further reinforced after encapsulating the ice in a second squishy membrane. The algae solution was then used to keep the frozen water for long periods of time. As a result, the structure became thicker and stronger.
"The main point in manipulating the water as solid ice during the encapsulation is to make it possible to get bigger spheres and allow the calcium and algae to stay exclusively in the membrane", Gonzalez said.
Testing of this edible bottle has been done in some European cities, but researchers want to make it a perfect one before going big.
