Pakistan seeks free space ride from China for its astronaut - Times of India

BEIJING: Pakistan has queued up for a free ride almost the moment China announced it would induct foreigners in the team of astronauts in its forthcoming manned mission to space.

Pakistan would like to be the first country to benefit from the programme, Ahmed Bilal, chairman of the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission, told 'China Daily' newspaper.

The Pakistani request came immediately after Yang Liwei, deputy director of China Manned Space Agency and the country's first astronaut, said on Wednesday: "We would be glad to provide trips to foreign astronauts." Many countries submitted proposals to the Chinese government during the development of the space station, hoping China would help train their astronauts and then send them to the station to conduct scientific experiments, Yang said.

He mentioned past and present cooperation with space scientists from Russia, France, Germany and the European Space Agency. There was no mention of Pakistan.

"We also want to cooperate with China in remote sensing technology and educating the public about space," 'China Daily' quoted Bilal as saying. Sources said a space ride for a Pakistani astronaut would help the country prove its claim of being China's closest ally.
