Thousands of Canadian hopefuls sign up for Mars mission - Toronto Star

Nearly 7,000 Canadians are competing for a coveted spot on what would be the ultimate commute — to Mars.

Dutch entrepreneur Bas Landorp plans to establish a human colony on the red planet by 2023, and is looking for volunteers in what could very well be a one-way mission.

More than 165,000 applicants from 140 countries have currently signed up for the $6-billion Mars One expedition.

And it seems among them there are thousands of Canadians who have itchy inter-galactic feet.

Every candidate had to post a video to the Mars One website explaining why they should be one of the lucky four colonists.

Duane, 66, has had a passion for Mars since he was a kid, and armed with a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering, says he's better prepared than any other applicant.

"We need to establish a sustainable habitat on another planet," he says. "Mars is really the best shot in our lifetimes to do that, and that's job number one in this mission."

But for Walter, 25, it's more about gathering material for his first novel.

"I'd love to write the first novel on Mars — it'll probably be about Earth," he jokes.
