Lack of cadaver preservation tanks worries anatomy dept at MKCG - Times of India

BERHAMPUR: Storing of cadavers at MKCG Medical College and Hospital has suffered because of lack of sufficient preservation tanks in the anatomy department the health hub.

The department has six such tanks. Four of them are in a dilapidated condition and are lying unutilized. It was one of the reasons, we are not taking much interest to collect more unclaimed bodies, said a faculty member in the anatomy department.

The cadaver preservation tanks were set up about five decades ago, when the medical college was constructed. Since then they have not been repaired. "We have requested the college authorities to renovate the tanks to facilitate to the preservation of more cadavers," said Sadananda Rath, the head of the department, anatomy department, MKCG Medical College and Hospital.

"We hope the government takes up the matter seriously and take necessary steps to renovate the tanks," he added.

The college has found an answer to the problem. "We are collecting unclaimed bodies for research purposes. In the last three months, we have collected three bodies making the number of we have now eight cadavers in the department. Only four of them used in dissertation work of the MBBS students" he said.

The hospital would supply at least two cadavers to Sardara Medical College and Hospital, Bhawanipatnas per government's request.
