ISRO's balloon-borne experiment at Amrita - The Hindu

Indian Space Research Organisation is conducting a balloon-borne experiment pertaining to meteorological study at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Ettimadai, from August 26 to 29.

The experiment is synchronised with three locations – the ISRO campus in Thiruvananthapuram, Lakeside campus at Cochin University, Kochi, and National Institute of Oceanography, Dona Paula, Goa, according to S. Mahadevan, Chairman of Department of Sciences of the university.

The objective of the experiments is to explore the gradient of four significant meteorological parameters – temperature, pressure, humidity and wind flow. It profiles the complete troposphere every six metres up to a height of 30 km.

"This consists of flying a hydrogen-filled balloon that carries sensors to measure the parameters. During the complete time of flight of the balloon the payload sends data for every six metres through a GPRS transmitter to the ground station that is temporarily established near the aerospace laboratory on the campus. The date continues to be received till the balloon reaches a height of 30 km," Mr. Mahadevan said.

All four locations were selected to form a triangular pattern and so planned so that three locations were along the coast and the university was in a non-coast location to reveal meteorological variations.

The balloon was being sent up each day at designated times for the purpose of the experiment.
