India among nations generating lowest e-wastes from computers - Business Standard

According to a United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report titled 'Recycling - From E-waste to Resources', India with generation of less than 0.15 kg/capita/year of e-waste is amongst the countries with lowest quantity of per capita e-waste from personal computers, Environment Minister Jayanthi Natarajan said in a written reply to a query.

The minister also said the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) had already notified E-Waste Ru les in May 2011, which came into force with effect from May 1, 2012.

The concept of Extended Producers Responsibility (EPR) has been enshrined in these rules. As per the rules, the producers are required to collect the e-waste generated by setting up collections centres or take back systems either individually or collectively.

Wastes generated are required to be sold to a registered or authorised recycler or re-processor having environmentally sound facilities, the minister said.
