![]() When the Curiosity robotic rover touched down on Mars last August, the mission control crew along with a large portion of the public watched with excitement as a new era in advanced space exploration kicked off. Now, after a number of stunning images and revealing research reports, the rover is celebrating its one-year anniversary on the Red Planet, a milestone that offers encouragement for the future of robotics-led planetary exploration. To celebrate the successful mission and its ongoing efforts, NASA has planned a celebration today that will bring together the space agency's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) team to share insights on the achievement and what it portends for the future of such scientific endeavors. That meeting will be shared live via a streaming feed on NASA's website and on NASA Television from 10:45 a.m. to noon Eastern. "Successes of our Curiosity—that dramatic touchdown a year ago and the science findings since then—advance us toward further exploration, including sending humans to an asteroid and Mars. Wheel tracks now will lead to boot prints later," NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said in a statement. The team also released a new video titled The video features amazing footage from the perspective of the rover, shot using its Hazard-Avoidance Camera from August 2012 through July 2013. In addition to showing the rover traveling over the surface of Mars, the footage also shows it engaging in science experiments such as collecting soil and rock samples. This celebration of the robotic rover's achievements on Mars comes just a few days after the Curiosity team opened up an entirely new perspective on the mission by participating in a Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA) session, fielding random questions about the rover and its mission from the public. The session covered everything from the challenges of detecting life on another planet to the logistics behind Curiousity's operational lifespan on Mars. You can check out the entire revealing exchange here. ![]() via Science - Google News http://news.google.com/news/url?sa=t&fd=R&usg=AFQjCNGF1H-nb4PgrCHk2HHMSPT_iyd_5g&url=http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2422697,00.asp | |||
