MMC to identify all its open spaces - Times of India

MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has decided to make an inventory of all the open spaces in its possession. Towards that end, the civic body will soon recruit an additional surveyor for the purpose of identifying and demarcating all open spaces in the city belonging to the MMC. Confirming this, chief officer of the MMC Deepali Naik pointed out that the resolution to that effect has already been taken by the council and the modalities for appointing the surveyor will be finalized on Monday. "We already have one surveyor. But as the task of identifying all the open spaces is enormous, the services of another surveyor will help in expediting the exercise," Naik told TOI. On ce the open spaces are identified and demarcated, the MMC will construct compound walls along its boundaries so as to protect the plots from illegal encroachments. "We will not hesitate to demolish any structures erected by encroaching upon our open spaces," Naik stressed. What has compounded the problem for the MMC is that the list of open spaces belonging to the civic body has not been updated for the last several years. Records accessed by TOI from the MMC revealed that the civic body has in its possession 23 open spaces gifted to it for public recreational use, however, the database was found to be too old and outdated, sources said. "Demarcating and developing such plots will definitely free the land of illegal encroachments and curb anti-social activities.
