Number of Birds Taking Shelter in Chilika Drops this Year

As per reports, the number of birds seeking shelter at Chilika has come down this year as compared to that last year. The experts said about 59,687 were seen at the lake that extends to an area of 1100 sq. km.

The number is significantly lower than last year when about 77,609 different birds were counted at the waterfowl habitat in India. Located in Odisha, the lake is seen to have reduced inflow of the tidal water.

This has led to change in the salinity of water in the central and northern sector. B P Acharya, the Divisional Forest Officer at the Chilika Wildlife, said that this may be reason behind the fall in bird population reported at the place.

Further, he said that the weed infestation in the northern sector of the lagoon may also be another deciding factor for lesser birds at the place. The DFO has reported that among the birds at the spot, highest number was of lesser whistling duck, black tailed godwit, and little cormorant, which were counted to be 8,050, 6,911 and 6,561 in number respectively..

The findings formed a part of Summer Status Survey of the year. It also, however, found that the species like Greater Flamingoes, Grey Pelicans and Northern Shovellers were still seen at the place in spite of the hot weather.
