1998 QE2 asteroid to speed pass Earth - Telegraph.co.uk

The asteroid will pass Earth at a distance equivalent to 15 times the span between Earth and the Moon.

At 1.7 miles across, nine cruise ships the size of the QE2 could fit within its diameter.

The latest radar technology means scientists can study the surface of the asteroid in unprecendented detail.

"We think we're going to see images that will rival the calibre of what we can get from a spacecraft fly-by mission. They really should be that detailed and opportunities like that - they sometimes happen a few times a year but this is the best one that we know of in 2013," says Lance Benner from Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
